It can’t be understated how easy this is to do. It’s strange how it can work out, you know you want to accomplish something and you know that it is something so big that it scares you, and sometimes you think, “there is no way that I can accomplish this, because in order to do this big thing, I must be some big person.” It is just too easy to be hard on yourself and I wanted to talk a little about how I overcome this and hopefully it’ll be helpful for you as well.
Before I continue, I wanted to point out a simple observation; those who are most subject to self-deprecation are those who have some sort of vision or ambition for their lives. there is something that they want to live for, so if you have this struggle of thinking less of yourself, it’s very possible that it’s because you think a little (or a lot bigger than yourself right now). It’s because you have something you want to accomplish and you’re not sure if you are up to the tremendous task of doing what you’ve envisioned.
With that said, your vision is always developed at least one step beyond who you are today, but your vision is also a promise of who you can be tomorrow if you overcome self deprecation.
Self-Deprecation is Useless
We already know this! We know that it is a waste of energy because it’s actually an activity that we have to do, all activities use energy from our lives. We know that the energy that we unknowingly dedicated to self-deprecation would better be used in the actual goal that we seek to accomplish.
It also wastes time! The time that we spend in self-deprecation actually takes time away from what we are seeking to accomplish. As a result of this, self-deprecation leads us into procrastination. We spend the time being down on ourselves for not being good enough to get something done, that we actually take longer to get it done.
And here’s the biggest thing about it. Most of the time our self-deprecating voice, is just not true! Sure you may not be all that your vision has for you to be, but at the same time, self-deprecation by definition means that you are judging lower than what yourself really is. Who you deprecate yourself to be, is less than who you really are, therefore if you can even self-deprecate, you are not the deprecated version of yourself.
How do we get over this?
Let’s leave with some ways to get over deprecating ourselves.
- Accept the truth that you have something valuable to offer this world
Think what is self-deprecation deprecating from? a lot of times we may hold ourselves back because of the false notion that we have nothing to offer, well accept the fact that someone needs it. You were placed on this earth to make some sort of investment somewhere, and that’s just a fact of your life.
- Adopt a learning mindset
There will always be more to learn, just because we don’t know it yet, doesn’t make who you are any less! Instead of deprecating your self, you can use it as a learning opportunity. Both take about the same amount of energy, but they provide different results. Accept that you are in a process of growth.
- Learn to Encourage Yourself
Many times we can’t encourage ourselves because we feel like we have a lack of external encouragement. (Every time I blog I wonder, is anyone even going to read this?) We have to be able to push through and encourage ourself in the process. Encouraging yourself is another use of the energy that used to be used for self-deprecation
I guess the best I can say is that you have something important to share with the world. You are awesome and called to excellence, and self-deprecation does not have the right to hold the world back from the excellence that you are called to impress on it.
P.S. If you have any wisdom to share on this subject just write it below, I look forward from learning from you too.
